  • Procedure Benefits: PRESBYOND® reshapes the cornea with advanced laser technology, reducing the need for reading glasses and enhancing near vision clarity.
  • How It Works: PRESBYOND® laser treatment, uses a LASIK-based technique, creating a vision blend between near and distance through corneal reshaping.
  • Candidate Suitability: Ideal for individuals over 40 with active lifestyles dealing with presbyopia, but excludes those with certain corneal conditions.

What is PRESBYOND®?

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is an advanced laser vision correction procedure developed by ZEISS for people experiencing age-related changes in near vision. Unlike traditional LASIK, which is primarily designed to correct distance vision, PRESBYOND® extends the depth of focus to help you see clearly at near, intermediate and far distances.

Using sophisticated laser technology, PRESBYOND® creates a customised blend of vision between your eyes, allowing your brain to naturally combine the images into one seamless visual experience. The result is excellent functional vision across multiple distances with significantly reduced dependence on reading glasses for many everyday activities.

PRESBYOND® vs Monovision LASIK

Both PRESBYOND® and traditional monovision LASIK aim to reduce dependence on reading glasses by correcting one eye for near vision and the other for distance vision. However, PRESBYOND® takes this approach a step further.

Using ZEISS Laser Blended Vision technology, PRESBYOND® increases the depth of focus in each eye, creating a smoother transition between near, intermediate and distance vision. This blended visual range allows the brain to merge images more naturally, helping many patients adapt more comfortably than with conventional monovision.

For patients who spend their day switching between reading, computer work, driving and other daily activities, PRESBYOND® can provide a more balanced visual outcome while maintaining excellent binocular vision.

Who is Suitable for PRESBYOND®?

PRESBYOND® is designed for people experiencing age-related changes in near vision who want greater freedom from reading glasses while maintaining excellent distance vision. Because every patient's eyes and visual needs are different, a comprehensive assessment is required to determine whether PRESBYOND® is the most suitable treatment.

During your consultation, your surgeon will assess your prescription, corneal thickness and shape, overall eye health, lifestyle and visual goals. This detailed examination allows us to customise your treatment and ensure the best possible outcome.

Generally, suitable candidates for PRESBYOND® include:

  • Adults over the age of 40 experiencing presbyopia.
  • People with active lifestyles who would like to reduce their reliance on reading glasses.
  • Patients with presbyopia combined with myopia, hyperopia and/or astigmatism.
  • People with a stable prescription and healthy eyes.

PRESBYOND® may not be suitable for everyone. Certain eye conditions, including keratoconus, significant dry eye disease, corneal scarring or other corneal abnormalities, may affect your eligibility. Your surgeon will discuss all suitable treatment options during your consultation.

PRESBYOND® vs PresbyMAX

PRESBYOND® and PresbyMAX are both advanced laser vision correction procedures designed to reduce reliance on reading glasses, but they achieve this using different treatment profiles.

PRESBYOND® uses ZEISS Laser Blended Vision technology to create an extended depth of focus while maintaining a smooth transition between different viewing distances. PresbyMAX uses a multifocal laser profile to provide functional vision at near and distance.

Both procedures can produce excellent results for suitable patients, but the most appropriate option depends on your prescription, eye health, lifestyle and visual expectations. During your consultation, your surgeon will recommend the treatment that best suits your individual needs.

What Happens During PRESBYOND® Treatment?

PRESBYOND® is performed using a LASIK-based technique and is completed as a day procedure under anaesthetic eye drops, ensuring you remain comfortable throughout treatment.

The procedure begins by creating a thin corneal flap using a precision femtosecond laser. An excimer laser then gently reshapes the cornea according to your personalised PRESBYOND® treatment plan before the flap is carefully repositioned, where it naturally adheres without stitches.

Unlike conventional LASIK, PRESBYOND® creates an extended depth of focus by optimising your dominant eye for distance vision and your non-dominant eye for near vision, while blending the transition between the two. This customised visual profile helps provide smooth vision across near, intermediate and far distances.

The procedure itself usually takes only a few minutes per eye, and most patients return home shortly afterwards.

Recovery After PRESBYOND®

Recovery following PRESBYOND® is generally quick, with many patients noticing an improvement in their vision within the first few days. While distance and near vision often improve rapidly, it can take several weeks for your brain to fully adapt to the blended vision created by the procedure.

After treatment, you'll be advised to rest for the remainder of the day and follow your personalised post-operative care instructions. For the first two weeks, avoid swimming, strenuous exercise and eye makeup to allow your eyes to heal properly.

Your surgeon will monitor your recovery through scheduled follow-up appointments and ensure your eyes are healing as expected before you resume all normal activities.

PRESBYOND® Cost & Consultation

The cost of PRESBYOND® treatment varies depending on your individual prescription and treatment requirements. Following your comprehensive assessment, your surgeon will explain the most suitable treatment option and provide a personalised quotation with no hidden surprises.

At WA Laser Eye Centre, we believe every patient should fully understand their treatment options before making a decision. During your consultation, you'll have the opportunity to discuss the procedure, expected outcomes, recovery and costs with your surgeon.

Interest-free payment plans are available for eligible patients, making PRESBYOND® more accessible. To learn more about pricing and available finance options, visit our Cost of Laser Eye Surgery page.

Frequently Asked Questions About PRESBYOND®

What is the Difference Between LASIK and PRESBYOND®?

Standard LASIK only corrects distance vision, whilst PRESBYOND® corrects your non-dominant eye for near vision and your dominant eye for distance. This allows for clear vision at near, intermediate and far distances.

How is PRESBYOND® Different from Monovision LASIK?

Traditional monovision LASIK corrects one eye for distance and the other for near vision. PRESBYOND® builds on this concept by creating an additional blended zone of focus in each eye, allowing your brain to combine images more naturally. Many patients find this provides better intermediate vision and a more comfortable visual experience.

Is PRESBYOND® Permanent?

PRESBYOND® provides long-lasting correction by permanently reshaping the cornea. However, it cannot prevent the natural ageing process of the eye. Over time, age-related changes to the natural lens may continue, meaning some patients may eventually require reading glasses or additional treatment later in life.

How Long Does Recovery Take After PRESBYOND®?

Most patients notice significant improvements in their vision within the first few days after surgery and are able to resume many normal daily activities shortly afterwards. Although your eyesight improves quickly, it can take several weeks for your brain to fully adapt to the blended vision created by PRESBYOND®.

Will I Still Need Reading Glasses After PRESBYOND®?

Many patients significantly reduce or eliminate their dependence on reading glasses following PRESBYOND® treatment. However, results vary depending on your prescription, eye health and the natural ageing process. During your consultation, your surgeon will discuss the outcomes you can realistically expect.

Is PRESBYOND® Painful?

No, PRESBYOND® is not painful. PRESBYOND® is performed using anaesthetic eye drops, so the procedure itself is generally painless. Some patients experience mild irritation, watering or light sensitivity for a few hours afterwards, but this typically settles quickly during the healing process.

How Long Does the PRESBYOND® Procedure Take?

The laser treatment itself usually takes only a few minutes per eye, although you should allow around two hours at the clinic for preparation, the procedure and post-operative checks before returning home.
