What is PresbyMAX® Laser Treatment?

PresbyMAX® is an advanced laser eye surgery for presbyopia designed to reduce or eliminate the need for reading glasses. Using SCHWIND AMARIS laser technology, PresbyMAX® reshapes the cornea to create multiple focal zones. PresbyMAX® vs Monovision LASIK

PresbyMAX® and monovision LASIK are both designed to reduce dependence on reading glasses, but they work in very different ways.

Monovision LASIK corrects one eye for distance and the other for near vision. While effective for some patients, it relies heavily on the brain adapting to two separate focal points.

PresbyMAX® LASIK treatment instead creates multiple focal zones within each eye, allowing both eyes to contribute to near and distance vision. This often results in a more balanced and natural visual experience, particularly for tasks such as reading, computer use and driving.

Who is Suitable for PresbyMAX®?

PresbyMAX® is a personalised treatment and requires a full eye examination to determine suitability. During your consultation, we assess your prescription, corneal thickness and shape, overall eye health and lifestyle to ensure the treatment is appropriate for you.

Generally, suitable candidates include:

  • Adults over the age of 40 experiencing presbyopia
  • Patients with myopia, hyperopia and/or astigmatism
  • People wanting to reduce dependence on reading glasses
  • Patients with healthy corneas and stable vision

PresbyMAX® may not be suitable for patients with conditions such as keratoconus, significant dry eye or corneal scarring.

PresbyMAX® vs PRESBYOND®

Both PresbyMAX® and PRESBYOND® are advanced laser treatments for presbyopia, but they use different approaches to achieve clearer vision.

PresbyMAX® uses SCHWIND AMARIS laser technology to create a multifocal corneal profile with multiple focal points in each eye.

PRESBYOND® uses ZEISS Laser Blended Vision technology, which enhances monovision by increasing depth of focus and blending near and distance vision between both eyes.

What Happens During PresbyMAX® Treatment?

PresbyMAX® LASIK eye surgery is performed as a day procedure using advanced femtosecond and SCHWIND AMARIS laser technology. The procedure involves:

  • Creating the flap - A femtosecond laser creates a thin, precise corneal flap
  • Accessing the cornea - The flap is gently lifted to expose the treatment area
  • Laser reshaping - The SCHWIND AMARIS laser reshapes the cornea using a PresbyMAX® multifocal profile
  • Repositioning the flap - The flap is returned to place and heals naturally without stitches

The treatment takes only a few minutes per eye and is performed under anaesthetic eye drops for comfort.

Recovery After PresbyMAX® Surgery

Most patients notice an improvement in vision within the first few days after PresbyMAX® laser treatment, particularly for near tasks such as reading. Vision continues to stabilise over several weeks as the eyes adapt to the multifocal corneal profile. Some fluctuation in vision during this period is normal.

Patients are advised to rest on the day of surgery and follow all post-operative instructions. Swimming, eye makeup and strenuous exercise should be avoided for around two weeks.
