What Does Presbyopia Surgery Involve?

Presbyopia surgery is similar to standard laser procedures but uses specialised software for PresbyMAX®. This advanced presbyopia correction treatment, performed with the SCHWIND AMARIS laser, ensures a seamless transition between distance and near vision. The surgery procedure involves creating multiple precisely calculated focal points in the eye, similar to multifocal contact or intraocular lenses. This results in a good depth of field and high-quality vision at all distances.

The Procedure for PresbyMAX® Laser Treatment

  • Creating the flap - We create a flap with a highly precise femtosecond laser.
  • Changing the laser - We reposition you to the SCHWIND AMARIS 1050rs excimer laser.
  • Folding back the flap - We gently fold back the flap, exposing the inner corneal tissue that we need to treat.
  • Correcting the error - The SCHWIND AMARIS Excimer laser reshapes the corneal tissue correcting the refractive error.
  • Repositioning the flap - The flap is returned to its original position, protecting the eye like a natural bandage.

Each laser is activated for a short time and the entire procedure takes just a few minutes.

Who Can Undergo PresbyMAX®

Because we customise the PresbyMAX® Lasik treatment to each patient, you will have to undergo a detailed eye examination. The nature and degree of your refractive error(s), curvature and thickness of the cornea, as well as many other factors, play a role in your suitability for PresbyMAX® treatment. We will ask you questions about your hobbies, your daily activities and other aspects that might affect the decision to go ahead.

Generally, suitable candidates include:

  • People over the age of 40.
  • People with very busy and active lifestyles who often find having to use reading glasses inconvenient.
  • Patients with presbyopia and other refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia or/and astigmatism.

It’s important to note that corneal issues like scars, keratoconus and dry eye can exclude you from eligibility.

Post Presbyopia Surgery Care

After surgery, visual acuity typically improves rapidly, especially for near vision. However, adaptation to the new visual impression may take slightly longer than conventional LASIK treatment. We advise patients to go home and rest for a few hours after the procedure. Refrain from applying makeup around the eyes for two weeks. Vigorous exercise and swimming can also be resumed after two weeks.
