Are You Considering LASIK Eye Surgery?

If you’re considering laser eye surgery in Perth, you may have heard of the term ‘LASIK’. LASIK stands for Laser Insitu Keratomileusis, which is a common type of refractive surgery or laser eye surgery aimed to correct refractive errors.

A refractive error is where the eye fails to bend light effectively, resulting in blurred vision and other eye related issues including short sightedness, long sightedness, age-related loss of near vision and astigmatism.

Through LASIK eye surgery, we can help you achieve improved vision without glasses or contact lenses. Take our Suitability Test to find out if you’re eligible for LASIK eye treatment. If you have any further questions about LASIK treatment, contact us today on (08) 9330 8463.

What is LASIK Eye Surgery?

In simple terms, our LASIK surgery in Perth removes tissue from under a flap in the cornea to change its curvature and ultimately the focus of the eye. Unlike mechanical instruments, laser technology can program the dimensions of your corneal flap to suit your eye. The Femtosecond laser creates the flap from beneath the cornea surface without cutting it.

What are the Benefits of Undergoing LASIK Eye Treatment?

There are many advantages of choosing to undergo LASIK eye surgery including:

  • No scarring
  • 100% blade free procedure
  • Fast visual recovery period
  • Can treat both eyes at the same time
  • Improved and enhanced vision without glasses or lenses

At WA Laser Eye Centre, we’re equipped with the latest and most advanced technology to safely perform LASIK eye surgery in Perth.

Are There Any Risks with LASIK eye treatment?

Like many other surgical procedures, there are some associated risks and side effects with the LASIK eye surgery we offer at our Perth clinic. Some complications that may arise include dry eyes, flap slippage, and haloes and night glare. However, complications are rare with our patients due to our experience, technology used and processes

LASIK is not a suitable treatment method for some conditions, including cataracts and presbyopia. Instead, we recommend different laser eye surgery options for treating presbyopia: PresbyMAX or PRESBYOND.

Please speak to our staff or principal surgeon Dr Robert Paul about any concerns you may have about LASIK eye treatment.

Our LASIK Eye Surgery Steps

LASIK eye surgery is well known for its short recovery period and effectiveness on patients who suffer from a range of conditions including short-sightedness and blurry vision. Learn about the steps for the LASIK eye surgery performed at our Perth clinic below.

  • Ultra–fast laser pulses create microscopic bubbles at a depth set by your doctor.
  • The laser goes through your cornea harmlessly, making rows of bubbles underneath the surface as it moves across your eye.
  • The laser then places bubbles around the cornea’s edge to make the flap. The angle is determined by your doctor based on your eye shape.
  • This whole process takes about 6 seconds.
  • Your doctor gently lifts the flap for the second step of your LASIK treatment.
  • The Excimer laser reshapes the cornea to fix the refractive error.
  • When treatment is complete, the flap “locks” back into place and rapidly begins to heal.

Frequently Asked Questions About LASIK Eye Treatment

> How do I know if I am suitable for LASIK eye surgery?

To find out whether you’re suitable for LASIK eye surgery, you’ll need to attend an initial assessment at our Nedlands or Melville rooms. During this appointment, we’ll check your vision prescription and assess the overall health of your eyes. We’ll also explain the procedure in detail and discuss the results you can expect. Bringing a referral letter from your GP or Optometrist may help reduce appointment costs. If you’d like to confirm your suitability or have any questions, please get in touch with us.

> How long does LASIK eye treatment last? Are the results permanent?

Yes, LASIK eye surgery permanently reshapes your cornea. The results don’t wear off, but your eyes may still change naturally with age, especially if you had a high prescription to begin with. If this happens, you may need glasses again or a laser enhancement.

> How long does the LASIK eye surgery take?

The LASIK eye surgery procedure itself only takes about 10 minutes per eye, but your full appointment will run for about 90 minutes.

> What if I move my eye during the LASIK eye treatment?

The Excimer laser we use during LASIK eye surgery uses an advanced infrared eye-tracking system that detects even the smallest eye movements and guides the laser to follow them. Its multi-dimensional tracking continuously monitors the exact position of your eye, automatically pausing treatment if your eye moves outside the safe treatment zone.

> How long will it be until I can see clearly after LASIK eye surgery?

You’ll be able to make out your surroundings right after the LASIK procedure, with your vision becoming clear within about six hours.

>How long until I can drive after LASIK eye surgery?

Most patients can safely drive the day after surgery. However, you should wait for your post-operative appointment, when your surgeon can advise you whether it is safe to do so.

> When can I go back to work after LASIK eye treatment?

Most people take two days off work, the day of the LASIK eye surgery and the following day. A medical certificate can be provided for this. You can return to work as soon as your vision feels comfortable, just make sure to avoid dusty or dirty environments for at least a week to allow healing and reduce infection risk. Full comfort with prolonged reading or computer use may take a few weeks.

> What can’t I do after LASIK eye treatment?

  • Swimming: Avoid swimming (pools and beach) and spas for at least 2 weeks.
  • Surfing: Wait 2 weeks before surfing.
  • Scuba Diving: Do not scuba dive for at least 1 month.
  • Light exercise: Light exercise is safe within the first week. Just be cautious around others, avoid rubbing your eyes and try to prevent sweat from getting into your eyes.
  • Contact sports: Avoid contact sports for 1 month.

> What are the potential risks of LASIK eye surgery?

LASIK treatment is a surgical procedure and, like any surgery, carries some risks and potential complications. Fortunately, these are very uncommon, and advances in technology have further reduced the likelihood of problems. Serious complications affecting vision are extremely rare. Possible complications may include:

  • Infection (Extremely rare, with an estimated risk of 1 in 3,000, lower than the risk associated with contact lens wear.)
  • Complications creating the flap
  • Haloes and glare at night
  • Loss of best-corrected vision
  • Overcorrection or undercorrection
  • Delayed healing

> When can I wear eye makeup after LASIK eye treatment?

Avoid using any eye makeup on both the eyelids and lid margins for at least one month after LASIK eye surgery. When you do use makeup again, choose hypoallergenic products and avoid mascara that lengthens lashes, as the fibres can fall into your eyes throughout the day.
