Presbyopia Treatment – Improve Your Reading Vision

Restore Your Near Vision and Reduce Dependence on Reading Glasses

If you’re experiencing difficulty focusing on close objects or finding yourself relying on reading glasses more often, you may have presbyopia — a natural part of ageing that affects the eye’s ability to focus up close.

At WA Laser Eye Centre, we proudly offer two advanced laser solutions for presbyopia: PresbyMAX® and PRESBYOND®. Both treatments are designed to enhance near and distance vision, allowing you to enjoy life with greater visual freedom.

Our highly experienced team, led by Dr Robert Paul, provides personalised care using the latest technology to deliver outstanding results for every patient.

Understanding Presbyopia

Presbyopia typically begins in your early to mid-40s as the eye’s natural lens loses flexibility, making it harder to focus on nearby objects. This can lead to difficulty reading, eye strain, or the need for multiple pairs of glasses.

Can Presbyopia Be Corrected?

Yes. Modern laser techniques such as PresbyMAX® and PRESBYOND®, as well as Lens Exchange/Cataract Surgery with multifocal lenses, can effectively correct presbyopia and reduce or eliminate the need for reading glasses.

Our Advanced Laser Treatments

PresbyMAX®

PresbyMAX® is an advanced laser procedure that adjusts the optics of the cornea to extend the eye’s depth of focus, providing clear vision at multiple distances.

Benefits of PresbyMAX®:

  • Very short, minimally invasive treatment time of just a few minutes.
  • Rapid restoration of near vision.
  • High-quality vision at all visual distances.
  • Simultaneous correction of visual defects such as shortsightedness, longsightedness or astigmatism.
  • High patient satisfaction and impressive clinical results
  • Reversible if required.

Conditions Treated:

  • Presbyopia
  • Myopia(shortsightedness)
  • Hyperopia (longsightedness)
  • Astigmatism

How PresbyMAX® Works:
Presbyopia surgery is similar to standard LASIK but uses specialised PresbyMAX® software and the SCHWIND AMARIS laser. The treatment creates multiple focal points within the cornea, much like a multifocal lens, resulting in excellent vision across near, intermediate, and far distances.

The Procedure:

  • Creating the flap – We create a flap with a highly precise femtosecond laser.
  • Changing the laser – We reposition you to the SCHWIND AMARIS 1050rs excimer laser.
  • Folding back the flap – We gently fold back the flap, exposing the inner corneal tissue that we need to treat.
  • Correcting the error – The SCHWIND AMARIS Excimer laser reshapes the corneal tissue correcting the refractive error.
  • Repositioning the flap – The flap is returned to its original position, protecting the eye like a natural bandage.

The entire process takes only a few minutes per eye.

PRESBYOND®

PRESBYOND® Laser Blended Vision is a next-generation presbyopia treatment developed by Carl Zeiss. It is a LASIK-based procedure that corrects both distance and near vision while maintaining smooth, natural binocular vision.

Unlike traditional monovision, where one eye is set for distance and the other for near vision, PRESBYOND® creates a blended zone of focus in each eye. This allows the brain to merge both images effortlessly, giving sharper vision at all distances with minimal adaptation time.

Benefits of PRESBYOND®:

  • Significantly reduces or eliminates the need for reading glasses
  • Enhances clarity and contrast for near vision
  • Smooth, natural transition between near and distance vision
  • Retains good depth perception and contrast sensitivity
  • Quick, comfortable, and highly effective
  • Suitable for treating presbyopia along with myopia, hyperopia, or astigmatism
  • Fast recovery with minimal downtime
  • Reversible if required

How PRESBYOND® Works

  • The dominant eye is optimised for distance vision
  • The non-dominant eye is fine-tuned for near vision.
  • A blended vision zone is created in each eye, ensuring both eyes work together seamlessly.

This results in a broad depth of focus, allowing patients to see clearly at near, intermediate, and far distances without needing separate reading or distance glasses.

The Procedure Step-by-Step

  • Creating the flap – A precision laser gently creates a thin flap on the cornea.
  • Reshaping the cornea – The excimer laser reshapes the cornea using PRESBYOND® software to generate the ideal blend zone.
  • Repositioning the flap – The flap is replaced to heal naturally without sutures.

The treatment takes only a few minutes per eye and is performed under anaesthetic eye drops for complete comfort.

Post Presbyopia Surgery Care

After surgery, visual acuity typically improves rapidly, especially for near vision. However, adaptation to the new visual impression may take slightly longer than conventional LASIK treatment. We advise patients to go home and rest for a few hours after the procedure. Refrain from applying makeup around the eyes for two weeks. Vigorous exercise and swimming can also be resumed after two weeks.

Who Is a Suitable Candidate?

Because each treatment is personalised, you will have to undergo a detailed eye examination. The nature and degree of your refractive error(s), curvature and thickness of the cornea, as well as many other factors, play a role in your suitability for treatment. We will ask you questions about your hobbies, your daily activities and other aspects that might affect the decision to go ahead.

Generally, suitable candidates include:

  • People over the age of 40.
  • People with very busy and active lifestyles who often find having to use reading glasses inconvenient.
  • Patients with presbyopia and other refractive errors like myopia, hyperopia or/and astigmatism.

It’s important to note that corneal issues like scars, keratoconus and dry eye can exclude you from eligibility.
